The aim of this activity is to is to count a requested number of objects - no more and no less. This can be quite difficult, so your child may need more help and practice to master it than for some of the other activities.
A number button and a stack of cards are shown beside an empty box. The idea is to drag the number of cards shown on the button into the box, and then to tap the number button to indicate you’ve finished.
By default, the stack contains the correct number of cards, so dragging them all into the box and then tapping the number will be correct, but dragging less cards will be incorrect. However, if you use the activity's Settings button to enable the Extra Cards option (see below), the stack may contain more cards than needed, and then it is possible to drag too many cards into the box. In this case, you can change your mind before you tap the button - just drag the surplus cards back out.
If you have counted correctly, the reward is presented, and a blue arrow button appears so you can move on to play with the next stack of cards. If you are incorrect, the missing or surplus cards are moved in or out for you, and the activity repeats with the same number so you can retry.
You can change the reward and arrow behavior from the common settings in the opening view, as explained in Chapter 3. The activity also has its own settings, which you can access from its Settings button:
The first number to present, between 1 and 20. The default is 1.
The last number to present, between 1 and 20. The default is 5.
Play In Order
This is ON by default, meaning that each stack of cards contains one more card than the previous one (or one less, if First Number is larger than Last Number). If it's OFF, the stacks are presented in a random order, e.g. 3 cards, then 2, 1, 5 and 4.
Correct When Wrong
If this is ON, and you tap the number button with the wrong number of cards in the box, the missing cards are added for you (or the surplus ones removed) to show the correct result. Turn OFF to disable this.
Retry When Wrong
By default, after getting the number of cards in the box wrong, the activity repeats with the same desired number. Turn off if you prefer to move on to the next number regardless of whether right or wrong.
As discussed above, if this setting is OFF, the number of cards in the stack matches the number requested, and over-filling the box is not possible. If you turn this ON, the stack always contains either First Number or Last Number cards, whichever is larger, allowing you to practice the skill of stopping at the requested amount.
Type Of Object
You can choose the objects to show in each stack of cards: Matching or Mixed balls, animals, flowers, pencils or bugs. Mixed means each object is randomly selected from the available ones; matching means they are all the same.
If this sound setting is ON, the quantity is spoken when the cards appear. Turn OFF to disable this.
When Move Card
If this sound setting is ON, then when you drag a card into or out of the box, the total number of cards now in the box is spoken. Turn OFF to disable this.
When Tap Box
If this sound setting is ON, tapping an unoccupied part of the box speaks the total number of cards in the box, and tapping each card in the box speaks a number, from 1 for the top left object, counting upwards. You can use this to help finger count the objects in the box. Turn OFF to disable this.
If this sound setting is ON, and Retry When Wrong is also ON, the words ‘try again’ are spoken if you tap the tap the number button with the wrong number of cards in the box. Turn OFF to disable this.
