If you are using the native edition (Special Stories), downloaded from the App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore, or deployed through Apple School Manager, no additional installation steps are required. The remainder of this chapter applies to the web-based edition (Special Stories Plus) only.
Use Safari to open the link that was sent to you along with your product key. Do not bookmark this page, instead you will be directed to use Safari's Add to Home Screen option. You will then have a new icon on your home screen for the web app - use this to open it, and log in with the details you were previously sent.
Use Google Chrome to open the link that was sent to you along with your product key. Do not bookmark this page, instead open Chrome's menu (using the ⋮ button), and select Add to Home screen. You will then have a new icon on your home screen for the web app - use this to open it, and login with the details you were previously sent.
Unfortunately Amazon Fire OS does not support installing web apps, instead you will need to run the web app directly in your browser. Bookmark the link that was sent to you along with your product key, and use this to open the app.
You do not have to install the app in order to use it on computers running Windows, macOS or Chrome OS, but we strongly encourage you to do so - it will then behave more like a standard application, without the search bar and decorations usually shown by web browsers, although it will still actually be run with the support of the browser you used to install it.
We recommend installing using either Google Chrome (on any of these platforms) or Microsoft Edge (on Windows or macOS, but not the "legacy" version of Edge on Windows, which Microsoft no longer supports). It is not currently possible to install a web app using Safari on macOS, without additional tools. We do not recommend using Mozilla Firefox, as it has limitations with text-to-speech.
Start by using Chrome or Edge to open the link that was sent to you along with your product key. Login to the app, and then once it starts an install button will appear. Tap this to install - the app will then restart in its own window.
Note 1: Uninstalling the app will delete your content. You should take care to export any valuable stories before doing so, as explained in Chapter 6.
Note 2: Log out of the app (from Actions > Reset > Logout) before uninstalling - otherwise you may be prevented from logging into it on another device (or in a different browser on the same device).
To uninstall on iOS or Android, remove as you would with any other app (deleting the Home Screen icon). To uninstall on Chromebook, right-click the app's icon in the Shelf, and select Uninstall.
To uninstall on Windows or Mac open the app, logout of it, tap the menu button (⋮ or …) in its top bar, and select the uninstall option. You will be presented with a pop-up similar to that in the lower screenshot above. Click the "clear data" box and then the Remove button.
